Linus 先生在上周末发布了 Linux 内核的 5.3-rc6 版本，顺带着在邮件中他庆祝了一下自己的这个小玩意已经 28 岁了。以下为当天邮件的全文：

1991 年 8 月 26 日，当年还是大学生的 Linus Torvalds 就向 “comp.os.minix” 新闻组的成员透露了出于 “业余爱好” 而正在研究操作系统的消息。因此，这个时间也被许多爱好者视为 Linux Kernel 的真正诞生日期。

Linux Kernel 下一个 LTS release 会是谁？

As I had this asked to me 3 times today (once in irc, and twice in email), no, the 5.3 kernel release is NOT the next planned Long Term Supported (LTS) release. I’ve been saying for a few years now that I would pick the “last released” kernel of the year to be the next LTS release. And as per the wonderful pointy-hair-crystal-ball, that looks to be the 5.4 kernel release this year.

Greg Kroah-Hartman，内核长期稳定版本的主要负责人，在一篇公开的博客中告诉我们，内核下一个长期维护版本 （Long Term Supported，简称 LTS），如果不出意外的话，将是 5.4，而不是 5.3。因为按照他近年来的习惯，总是取当年最后发布的一个版本作为长期维护的版本，而目前来看，今年（2019 年），有望最后一个发布的内核版本将是 5.4。

Android 换了新 Logo，不再喜欢小甜甜

Android is changing but not in ways you think. The Android dev team releases a new mobile OS version each year and this 2019 is no different. In fact, we’re only waiting for the day when the Q dessert will be unveiled. There’s a possibility it won’t be ‘sweet’ but we just know it will start with the letter ‘Q’– or so we think. Several beta versions have been released already and the Final build rolled out earlier this month. We won’t be surprised if Google will just announce the new version any day now.

自 Android 系统发布之时起，历代系统的命名都与甜品密不可分，但从下一代 Android 系统开始，我们再也见不到以甜品命名的系统。我们曾经以为的 Android Q 改成了 Android 10。谷歌给出的解释是，Android 作为一个全球性的品牌，版本需要有清晰的名称。以往的方式是选用不同甜品名称的首字母顺序来给不同版本的 Android 命名。这样命名虽然有趣，但也容易引出的问题。对于不了解命名传统的人来说，很多人是分不清哪个版本是更新的。另外这次 Logo 也换了，2014 年曾改过一次 Logo，这次保留了机器人的头部，字体颜色从绿改成黑。至于为何要换 logo， 谷歌的解释是：旧的 logo 对于有视力障碍的人来说，绿色字和绿色机器人在一起时，不易认出字来。现在字体是黑色，机器人还是绿色，放在一起对比更明显。所以，结论是：Android 10 （而不是 Android Q）最终版发布时，将采用新 Logo。

你名字太丑，我们还是分手吧！

In the world of open source applications, forking is common when members of the community want to take an application in a different direction than the rest. The latest newsworthy fork is named Glimpse and is intended to fix certain issues that users have with the GNU Image Manipulation Program, commonly known as GIMP.

大名鼎鼎的开源图片编辑器 GIMP （GNU Image Manipulation Program 的简称）社区里近日出了点事。一群开发人员另立山头，自己创建了一个项目分支，并起名为 GLIMPSE。虽然在其官方主页上，他们申明这么做的目的是为了 “experiment with other design directions and fix longstanding bugs.”，但是有趣的是，在该项目的第一篇 blog 文章中，他们给出的真正原因是 “讨厌 GIMP 这个名字”，在忍受了长达 13 年的煎熬但仍然看不到原项目有任何意愿更换名字的情况下，这部分同志忍无可忍，最终选择了重新 fork 原项目并起了目前的这个新名字 GLIMPSE。blog 中的原文如下，感兴趣的同学可以自己体会一下他们的感受：

If English is not your first language, then you may not have realised that the word “gimp” is problematic. In some countries it is considered a slur against disabled people and a playground insult directed at unpopular children. It can also be linked to certain “after dark” activities performed by consenting adults.
